Watson, which debuts on Sunday, January 26, 2025 (following the AFC Championship Game at approximately 10 p.m. ET), should fit well amongst the traditional older Eye net viewer who enjoys seeing crimes solved.
  • Morris Chestnut stars in CBS's new series Watson, premiering January 26 after the AFC Championship game.
  • Watson tackles life after Sherlock's death, with Moriarty as the looming antagonist in this modern mystery.
  • The series blends medical mystery with crime-solving, offering fresh intrigue from legendary stories.
CBS's upcoming Morris Chestnut-starring Watson offers a modern take on one of literary history's greatest detectives and poses a fascinating question as a jumping-off point for the series. What if the diabolical Moriarty was finally able to accomplish his goal of ridding the world of Sherlock Holmes once and for all? Set seven months after the death of the titular character's friend and partner, Sherlock Holmes, at the hands of Moriarty, Dr. John Watson (Chestnut) resumes his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. Watson's old life isn't done with him, though – with Moriarty and Watson set to write their own chapter of a story that has fascinated audiences for more than a century.

Premieres tomorrow, but unfortunately no waves yet.

In this universe, Moriorty popped Sherlock Holmes. Looking forward to seeing Morris clash against him eventually, but from the preview it looks like it might be your standard med drama but with a mystery twist. Still looking into it, but I'm very excited for this one

I don't know how long this one is gonna go, but I wonder how many seasons until the plot point of Sherlock Holmes actually being alive would take. A figure like that would snatch the whole show from Watson, so I doubt it happens unless this goes many seasons.

What Sherlock Holmes IP have you seen so far? For me it's just reruns of the Sherlock in the 22 Century cartoon and the Moriartchy the Patriot manga. Outside of that, it's just references to Sherlock Holmes in other medias. Does Moriartchy pop Sherlock in the books? He died by cliff in the cartoon as well before being revived in the 22 century.

You should, at this point in time, take the premise of the show for what it is - and assume Sherlock is indeed dead. It’s a different “adaptation” and they purposely set the world in this manner to focus on Watson.

Sure, if the show turns out a success and runs for a while, they can always do the “Sherlock’s alive” thing, but for the moment, this seems a medical procedural drama, with Sherlock Holmes characters, focusing on Watson, in a modern setting and with Moriarty as overarching “villain”.

If you’re interested in Sherlock Holmes modern adaptations then the BBC’s 2010 “Sherlock” is probably the most critically acclaimed one. CBS’ 2012 “Elementary” was also a fun watch

Sherlock actually being alive won’t take away from Watson with good writing and plotting. Whoever eventually plays the resurrected Sherlock will pop up for mid-season finales and maybe season finale arcs with 2 episode appearances. It doesn’t have to take away from Watson at all if they do it right.

They'd be better off just keeping the Sherlock character dead altogether as all it will do is create questions of why the character doesn't stick around if he turns out to still be alive and some BS reason to explain it.
