FLINT, MI -- A man holding a sign on how long the Flint water crisis has been taking place in the city has climbed its way to the top spot on Reddit Monday evening.

The post entitled "Don't forget about this" shows a man, whose name is not announced, with a piece of paper between his fingers stating "It's 2017 Flint, MI has been without clean water since APRIL 24, 2014."

April 24 was the day before officials flipped a switch and moved the city from receiving water via Detroit to the Flint River until the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline was completed.

Residents later began to discuss a smell and discoloration in the water and testing revealed elevated lead levels in homes, adults, and children leading to a switch back to Detroit and emergency declarations by local, state, and federal authorities.

Testing of late at homes with lead service lines has shown reductions in lead, but residents continue being advised to use filters and drinking bottled water rather than out of the tap.

More than one dozen local and state employees, including two former Flint emergency managers have also been charged in connection to the city's ongoing water crisis.

Myron Ebell, who oversaw the EPA transition for the new administration, told ProPublica on Monday that the freezing of grants and contracts was not unprecedented.


“They’re trying to freeze things to make sure nothing happens they don’t want to have happen, so any regulations going forward, contracts, grants, hires, they want to make sure to look at them first,” said Ebell, director of the Center for Energy and Environment at the Competitive Enterprise Institute, an industry-backed group that has long sought to slash the authority of the EPA.

“This may be a little wider than some previous administrations, but it’s very similar to what others have done,” he told the publication.

But not in recent history has such a blanket freeze taken place, and one employee told ProPublica he did not recall anything like it in nearly a decade with the agency.

Lead levels fall below federal limits in Flint, Michigan: state

Flint's lead levels are now comparable to levels in cities of similar size and with infrastructure of similar age, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said in a statement.

Even with the test results, programs that provide water filters and related services will continue, he said.

"This is not the end of our work in Flint, but it is one more step along the path toward Flint's future," said Snyder, a Republican who has been sharply criticized by Flint residents for his handling of the crisis.

In December, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette charged four former government officials with conspiring to violate safety rules, bring to 13 the number of current and former officials charged in connection with the water crisis.

A Reuters investigation last year found that Flint's lead poisoning was no aberration, but one example of a preventable health crisis that continues in hazardous spots in much of the United States. The investigation identified nearly 3,000 communities with recently recorded lead poisoning rates at least double those in Flint.

Michigans Department of Environmental Quality is funded in a significant part by the EPA...and they also do alot of the monitoring and testing
