It's all well and good for a woman to respect the man as the legitimate authority in the household...

However, for a man to be treated like a god he should have Godlike tendencies. That means you must be self-sufficient; that means that your wife can't be paying your bills and taking strides in life for you :usure:

If you're a worthy man then an equally worthy woman will follow. Y'all shouldn't act like good women aren't out there just because they aren't looking for you specifically. Let me say now, though, that I'm not addressing this to anyone specific. I'm just saying in general.

Having a fly chick to hold you down is one of the greatest joys in life :wow:

:salute: too much truth

Celie came to Mr. as a frequently raped teenager who'd had her children taken away from her. She received beatings from Mr. without regard to her meeting some standard set by him (which is touched on, when she talks about being beaten for not being Shug). It's interesting that his "power" over her is glorified while ignoring Black people's, including Black men's, lack of power in the movie. Interestingly, a woman was the only person to not completely defer to White people and look at the repercussions she suffered. They had no ability to ensure their own safety or even that of their children. I guess as long as women are kept underfoot that's what's most important. Celie wasn't "down", she had no choice and as soon as she had a choice, she left. In the book, she left to be with Shug.

I find it interesting that they changed that in the movie. Having her make up with her father, which never happened and not showing how Celie and Mr. became friends, which did happen.
