just make sure your story protagonist does not want the responsibility but rises to the occasion either through natural talent or help from outsiders throw in a love interest then make your setting turn into a war and you got yourself an epic tale.

That's Joseph Campbell's 'monomyth' which was already mentioned before. It's pretty much incoropated in tons of material you see today.

Long story short, half the shyt that makes "Star Wars" what it is George Lucas never wanted in his movies. That's why the 3 prequels are so terrible.

Fred.

Let's also not forget that the best-regarded movie from the trilogy is The Empire Strikes Back- the one movie that Lucas didn't direct himself.

Star Wars is good mostly despite Lucas, not because of him.

The original "Star Wars" Trilogy is the greatest trilogy of all time. Yes Over Lord of the Rings, Yes Over Dark Knight, Yes over Back to the Future. No trilogy in movie history had the impact, influence, success and imagination of the Star Wars Trilogy. "Godfather Trilogy" is the greatest drama trilogy ever. I'd Say Indiana Jones Trilogy is close and Back to the future is right there. Quality wise "Lord of the Rings" is there but Star Wars is better. What made the original trilogy so Epic and Classic is the fact that yes Lucas used many different influences from "Flash Gordan, Starman comics, Akira Kurosawa films etc" but he still created the world, the characters and everything in it.

You know how many characters are in the Star Wars universe? Also the movie actually had themes of religion, spirituality and nature. "Star Wars" was Epic. People forget it was done on a low budget originally and didn't even open in a lot of theaters but after everyone saw that opening shot of Leia getting away to Luke on the desert planet. To Han Solo swaged the f*ck out the whole movie. Sure Obi and Vader all old fighting was slow as hell but the battle was epic cause it helped Luke on his journey. Then the Space battles were off the chain. "Star Wars" is the most iconic of the series, it won 7 Oscars and changed hollywood forever. Critically though it's sequel "Empire Strikes Back" has slightly higher ratings and fans love it. Though it's box office was no where near the original. But "Empire" had it all and as far as acting and story it was the best. Luke finding out about his Father, Yoda training Luke. The whole snow planet sequence. The Sky City and Lando. The Carbon Freeze.

Lastly "Return of the Jedi" though not on the level of the 1st two, closes out the trilogy perfectly. Some complain about the Ewoks but for an 80's baby like me, they were cool. Love the space battle with the new death star. Loved the Speeder Bikes in the woods of Endor. Loved Luke becoming a full blown Jedi without finishing his training. The last fight with Vader was so emotional. And by Vader killing the Emperor he forfills the Prophecy and brings balance to the force. Also before CGI, Lucas revolutionized the special effects industry. Every major film after was influenced by what "Star Wars" did. The only film that changed the game with Effects that didn't have to do with Lucas company ILM in the last 40 years was "The Matrix". Jurassic Park, T2 etc was ILM.

It's the PERFECT trilogy, it had a beginning, middle and end. All 3 Films are Classics and you could play them on TV anytime and they'd get rating. The Prequel Trilogy pissed off original Star Wars fans but brought in a whole new generation. Then you got the Books, Video Games and now the Animated Series. It's the biggest movie franchise in History. "Star Wars Episode VII" in 2015 will break major records cause this fan base spans 3 different generations. Oh and I didn't bring up the music. John Williams music is so amazing you can listen to it outside the movie and get those same emotions. To Me I'm happy I grew up with it in the 80's but no matter when you discover, I can see today and get those same feelings so I know someone watching it for the 1st time will be blown away. Glad you liked it, the first trilogy is ICONIC.

I hate to be blunt, but almost the entire outline of the story is derivative. For example, Episode IV: A New Hope is heavily inspired by Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress. Even some of the scenes were shot with the same angles and general structure as scenes from the Kurosawa film.

In general, the trilogy is heavily influenced by Flash Gordon, Kurosawa films, and the archetypes Joseph Campbell set out in his Hero With a Thousand Faces (the last is the ultimate way to be derivative- read a study that discovers the allegedly-basic elements of all mythology and then use it as a how-to guide, creating a story that specifically relies on them.) Keep those 3 in mind and you'll start seeing them everywhere in the trilogy.

Great stuff:salute:

Every story borrows from the previous generations...if we can be honest then SW can go all the way back to simple greek shyt like the heroes journey, and the tragic hero. Its all thesame thing. What makes SW so good is the blends off all these other genres that somehow made the new genre of the space epic, which until the 70's wasn't really possible.

og SW is the best trilogy out there imo. It covers the bases, and no other films have created such a feverish craving for its universe and content for going on 4 decades now.

are you in it for the story or special effects

cause the first two movies are good but return of the jedi is meh.

You buggin'. That movie was the realization of a 6-year-wait to see Luke as a Jedi and what Darth Vader looked like under the helmet.

Star Wars, to us, is like Pokémon to you. We grew-up with it...

I actually liked The Prequels almost as much as the original trilogy. The only thing I truly loathed was the Jar Jar Binks character. But, the Ewoks didn't ruin ROTJ for me, so Binks didn't ruin TPM for me.

PS: ROTS is better than ANH.

So im right. :manny: Star Wars is a fluke and Lucas is a mediocre director. A New Hope is increbily boring and the main character is annoying. Empire Strikes Back has less Luke, more Han/Leia and isnt directed by Lucas.
