Everyone knows that liberals are the only ones who care about helping the poor, sick, and elderly. They are all about aiding those in need......as long as you don't ask them to pay for it.

Red states give more to charity. It’s because of religion.

By Philip Bump October 7 at 8:37 AM

Wealthier Americans gave less to charity in 2012 than they did in 2006, while poorer Americans gave more, a new analysis from The Chronicle of Philanthropy indicates. It's the most recent look at giving from the periodical, and that gap in giving -- particularly given the recession that occurred between those two years -- is what jumped out to them.

Something else caught our attention. Of the states that gave the most to charity in 2012, the top 17 all voted for Mitt Romney that year. The bottom seven states in giving all voted for Obama.

What could this mean? Is it the bootstraps, replace-the-safety-net-with-charity philosophy at work? On the interactive map provided, it's clear that the region with the densest giving was the South.

But that almost certainly correlates with another tendency that The Chronicle reported on last year: Religious people give more to charity. And in its annual assessment of the nation's religiosity, Gallup reveals that the states at the top of the giving list -- Utah, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee -- are also at the top in terms of religious devotion.

That question about the recession stuck with us, though. One would expect that, as the effects of the recession increased, charitable giving would likely drop. As The Chronicle pointed out, though, that's not what happened.

We pulled the change in poverty level in each state between 2006 and 2012 and compared it to the national change -- a 2.6-percentage-point increase. Then we mapped that against the change in giving in each state between those same years. States that saw lower poverty increases versus the national average were more likely to see declines. States that saw high poverty increases versus the national average -- that is, more poor people -- were more likely to see increases.

The gray line shows the national trend. It's a loose correlation, thanks in part to a number of Romney states that were disproportionately generous compared to the national trend.

The Chronicle also broke down giving by cities. The metropolitan region that gave the most was Salt Lake City, for reasons explained above. The city that gave the least? Hartford, Connecticut, insurance capital of the world. Make of that what you will.

They take more from the govt. so I guess they have more to give

Link from the loony left wing liberal rag the Wall Street Journal:

The personal finance social network crunched returns on taxes paid to the federal government, federal funding as a percent of state revenue and the number of federal employees per capita to conclude that Red States “are altogether more reliant on federal funding than Blue States.”

And "giving to charity" is largely based on religious tithes, i.e. low lifes trying to buy their way into heaven in order to compensate for being shtty, selfish human beings.

Red states also directly endorse policies that allow corporations and the 1% (especially the 0.1%) to get enormously more and more of the wealth to the detriment of everyone else. Which results in a FAR, FAR worse situation for the poor than giving a little bit of money to charity could make up for. It's like a mob boss who tricks the average person into thinking they are so generous for throwing a couple coins on the street.

What was the point of this thread troll?

But nobody's giving to ebola

http://money.cnn.com/2014/10/07/pf/ebola-donations/

The United States and other governments have pledged tens of millions of dollars to pay for everything from medicine and protective clothing for aid workers to safe burials for the deceased. Yet individual and corporate donations to support Ebola response efforts are lagging far behind the funds given in the aftermath of natural disasters, such as the 2010 earthquake in Haiti or last year's typhoon in the Philippines.

Where are all the bucket dumpers now?

We have already debated that graph. Remember when I posted the New York Times article that showed the majority of college graduates voted for Mitt Romney and the overwhelming majority of high school drops out voted for Barack Obama? I still don't think you have recovered from that ether.

But anyways.........what on earth do the education levels of voters have to do with liberals being cheap b*stards who are unwilling to donate to people in need?

The point of this thread was to the expose the hypocrisy of liberals who claim to care the most about the poor but actually do the least to help them. That is not trolling......it is delivering raw, unfiltered truth to uneducated rubes such as yourself. I apologize if it makes you uncomfortable.

As for policies that help the poor, the best way to help a poor person is not through charity or government welfare. The best way to actually help a poor person is to give them a job. And here in the U.S, red states (i.e. conservative states) are the ones that do the best at creating jobs. That is why there is so much population growth in the south.........Americans are packing up and leaving the North and Midwest and migrating to where the jobs are in states like Texas, Georgia, Carolinas, Utah, etc

So did I, but then I realised that this moron has probabaly stated the same right wing talking points thousands of times, so what's the point in replying to him when he is never going to see reality and change his mind?

Not mine.

I am Catholic, and almost every town in America has Catholic schools, Catholic hospitals, Catholic clinics, Catholic homeless shelters, Catholic soup kitchens, etc

What do you atheists do to help people?
