Both can be true. Europeans, and their diseases devastated the native population....at least that's what the evidence suggests.

Europeans did not just introduce venereal diseases to the natives, but also diseases like the chicken pox. Africans and Europeans were immune to diseases from the old world where they had domesticated certain animals thousands of years back like horses, cows, pigs, chickens, etc. Natives didn't have horses for example, until they were introduced to them by Europeans, so naturally they didn't have immunity to diseases carried by them.

Chicken pox, measles, tuberculosis, smallpox, influenza, whooping cough, malaria, are examples of diseases introduced to the new world.
