:webster:This whole thread. There's real issues in the world and the black community, and people are here waxing lyrical about Bronze Age :duck: and music conspiracies.

In the Quran:

"And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allaah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allaah, the Verses of the Qur'aan) by way of mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment (in the Hell-fire)."

Surah Luqman, Ayat 6

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 7.494B Narrated by Abu Amir

"that he heard the Prophet (saws) saying, "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful."

I listen to music as well, but breh let us not try to make the haram halal. Other then tambourine-like instruments, the playing of all other wind and musical instruments are considered unlawful in Islam.:francis:

A lot of music, whether you realise it or not, is manipulative and is a form of brainwashing. People that are involved in the music industry deliberatly intend to manipulate their listeners

it alters your mind, don't underestimate how powerful music is.

The Ayat you cited is completely dependent on the translation because

Sahih International
"And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment."

Surah Luqman [31:6]
https://quran.com/31:6
Asad

: But among men there is many a one that prefers a mere play with words [to divine guidance],4 so as to lead [those] without knowledge astray from the path of God, and to turn it to ridicule: for such there is shameful suffering in store.
Malik : Among the people there are some who purchase frivolous tales so that they may lead people away from the Way of Allah, without any knowledge, and take the invitation to the Right Way as a mockery. For such people there will be a humiliating punishment.
Pickthall : And of mankind is he who payeth for mere pastime of discourse, that he may mislead from Allah's way without knowledge, and maketh it the butt of mockery. For such there is a shameful doom.
Yusuf Ali : But there are among men those who purchase idle tales without knowledge (or meaning) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah and throw ridicule (on the Path): for such there will be a humiliating Penalty. 3584

Surah 31. Luqman, Ayah 6 | Alim.org

No where in the Quran does Allah explicitly prohibit music. Throughout the Quran when Allah prohibits something it is clearly defined and concise. It wasn't done in the Quran with music though.

I'm not going to delve into the Hadith thing because my previous post was only talking about the Quran, plus you can find plenty of contradictory Hadith.
Book 004, Number 1942:

'A'isha reported: The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) came (in my apartment) while there were two girls with me singing the song of the Battle of Bu'ath. He lay down on the bed and turned away his face. Then came Abu Bakr and he scolded me and said: Oh! this musical instrument of the devil in the house of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)! The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) turned towards him and said: Leave them alone. And when he (the Holy Prophet) became inattentive, I hinted them and they went out, and it was the day of 'Id and negroes were playing with shields and spears. (I do not remember) whether I asked the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) or whether he said to me if I desired to see (that sport). I said: Yes. I stood behind him with his face parallel to my face, and he said: O Banu Arfada, be busy (in your sports) till I was satiated. He said (to me): Is that enough? I said: Yes. Upon this he asked me to go.

Narrated Abu Musa:
That the Prophet said to him' "O Abu Musa! You have been given one of the musical wind-instruments of the family of David .'

I'm not making anything Haram because IMO it was never Haram to begin with. I accept your viewpoint and understanding of why you may consider it Haram, but I'm just trying to show that that viewpoint isn't all encompassing.

what are some rudimentary, essential jazz albums??? it's not a genre i'm well versed in...

I just go to a youtube playlist or the jazz channel on TWC or Pandora or if I find a radio station (same with classical or classic R and B).

The only genre I claim to know about is Hip Hop.. before 2000.

Kind of a weird situation.

Aren't Lucifer and Satan 2 different fallen angels? Serious question

In his fall from grace Abaddon (or apollo in greek) became lucifer. Satan and the devil are one of the many names used after his fall as well. When he is referenced in the bible as lucifer by Yahweh and his angels, it is in a mocking manner as he is a copy cat of Yeshua the true morning star.

No. Satan is just a title or description that means devil. There is only one chief demon and that is Lucifer, also referred to as Satan or devil.

Lucifer's angels from the rebellion became demons as they were casted out the heavenly realm. He is not an angel or demon, he is a cherubim, ezekial 28:14. Cherubim are huge and winged unlike angels who rest, eat and look exactly like humans, genesis 19:3, 19:4, 19:5

Man, do ya'll really not see the symbolism in the bible? It's not to be taken verbatim!! Argh this is so frustrating when mufukkas post quotes straight from the bible to prove something is true, but TOTALLY miss the symbolic nature in which the story is being told, lol.

Ok, so we know the story of Lucifer and we pretty much have an idea of how music impacts us....Lets apply the symbolism to modern day life and actually draw a conclusion, teach a lesson, make a parallel or something! Quit with all the fear mongering and literal takes, its symbolism.

So Lucifer was covered in stones, reflecting the light of God so people bowed...blah, blah, blah...he got big-headed, thought he was on the same level as God...God was not amused.
Modern day musical equivalent..."nikka yeah you might be shining, but you ain't the sun"
Moral of the story (Artist's Perspective)....If you make music, and your fans adore you, never lose sight of the fact that what they adore is the God in you and not you yourself. No matter how big of a star you are, you ain't the Sun.
Moral of the story (Worshiper/Fan's Perspective)...Appreciate the fact that you may recognize the God within someone you hold highly, but however it makes you feel, just know that they ain't God, so don't treat them like they're God.

The story of Lucifer is more about us than it's about Lucifer or a Devil or a Satanic being, but that's where we always get caught up cuz we don't recognize our own power. It can be applied to anything we "worship", not just music :manny:

We sat in a circle to discuss why they be spazzing out. They said they didn't know. I asked them what kind of music they listen to. They recited shoot, kill, murder, deal type lyrics. I asked them how did that make them feel. They said it made them feel angry and aggressive.

I told them that they should try switching up their music. Listen to R&B or even some pop (I knew they wouldn't go for Jazz) and see how it changes their mood. All of them did it accept the one knucklehead who gave me the "nah b" look.

Next month we had a follow up convo and they said the new music made them feel more calm and happier. Mix it up.

Sound is powerful. Words just aren't spelled, they are spells

this is why we should focus on mastering the language that we speak. It can shape and transform reality via the mind. :blessed:

That's why music has the power to change people's moods. Any ritual or ceremony (like voodoo for instance) will feature some sort of music or rhythm. That's why certain forms of hip hop are viewed how they are. Like Drill. I'm not saying anything new..

Yes. Before he became the satan as we call him, He was chief angel Lucifer and served in the throne room of God. His body was made of heavenly stones and jewels and timbres and pipes. These vibrant stones reflected the light and glory of God everywhere Lucifer went.

When the angels would see these stones and jewels encrusted in his being, they would fall to their knees and worship God as the jewels reminded them of the glory of God. Lucifers body would emit music as others worshiped, thus he is known as the father of music or the first musician.

However, it went to his head as he would always see angels bowing in worship when he was near and he took that as they were bowing to him. He became prideful and tried to exalt himself above God. Biggest mistake he ever made.
