And goddamn...that's saying a lot, I'm an 80s baby. My fam had MJ memorabilia up in the crib, and photo albums, like he was an extended member of the family.

There were "famous for nothing" and infamous nobodies who became household names in past eras.
Just that the tabloids would exploit and monetize the coverage of them back then. The National Enquirer was the TMZ of that era, and they blew up and cashed in on several of these figures. The term "15 minutes of fame" describes unknowns become instant celebrities.
The Jenner family just shrewdly extended that 15 minutes until today, and monetized that fame/infamy. Platforms to do that didn't exist back then.
They'd be lucky back then to get a book deal and rush it to print before the public forgot about them.
