It was an "epidemic" in the 80's and 90's because of the govt's propaganda push to get a handle on it. AIDS containment was the most defining movement of the 90's. Everybody was getting awareness out and prevention was priority #1. As others have pointed out, though, the average American is not at high risk for catching HIV, because they aren't homosexual or IV drug users, that's just a fact. Look at the stats and tell me we still have an epidemic. The HIV scare of the 90's was either extremely effective, or the disease simply isn't as easy to transmit as previously thought.

Is it possible for a hetersexual dude to catch it from a woman? Sure.
Is it likely, hell no.

That said, I don't advocate rawdogging strangers, but it's good to have an understanding of the FACTS of AIDS and HIV.

Then how are so many people in Africa contacting the disease. IV drug use and the practice of homosexuality(not necessarily homosexuality itself) are extremely rare.

I'm not entirely sure, tbh. I think a lot of it has to do with the overall poor state of healthcare in Africa. Individuals already infected with ailments are significantly more likely to contract the disease.

There's the lack of education aspect as well.

HIV-2 is the strain you'll find in Africa. It does prove to be more infectious over time, but you can hardly call HIV-1 a cold sore compared to HIV-2.
