Good analysis. I need to cop the DVD for the bonus features cause I need to hear that commentary. But yeah, I can't really recall them wearing red, besides Caine in the opening scene. Caine even rocked the solid blue shirt in the scene where his granddaddy was getting on his nerves talking that religious shyt, then him and O-Dog stomped out Ilenas cousin, so maybe it was some subtlety to it. A Wax was a crip in real life so, I'm not surprised he stayed in the blue flannel. But yeah, they definitely stayed in a crip hood

I think it's a testament to the talent of the Hughes brothers to make that film without one mention of the Crips and Bloods. It would have been much easier to flaunt that element. Boyz In The Hood, a movie that constantly gets compared to Menace, definitely played on the gang angle with the Bloods that had beef with Doughboy (who I'm sure was a Crip)
Boyznthehood did the same thing as menace abd didn't mention the gang

Clearly the dudes who shot Ricky were bloods

Dough n them were crippin even tho they never say it in the movie

There's also a debate whether rickys dad was a blood a cause he wears a lot a red in the movie but hes in a crip neighborhood abd that's why them bloods were only after him
