Warner Brothers Discovery will livestream MLB on TBS, NBA & NHL on TNT, US Soccer, and March Madness on (HBO) MAX

Will you pay for live sports on HBO Max?

If the play is to increase subscriber count, then that's the endgame IMO.

This is a pre-cursor for these streamers taking their shyt off of cable. People are going to go to where ever live sports are at.

Cable companies know this, it's really the only thing keeping them relevant in this space. We'll see real desperation when live sports aren't on any cable packages. That's when it's going to get ugly. Disney just showed us that these cable companies will cave without sports

:heh:
Live sports on cable >>>> on streaming. While you may have access to more stuff, you might also be behind depending on your ISP. The fear of that shyt buffering at the worst time always makes me hesitant to fully commit.

There's already smoke about Disney going direct to consumer with ESPN. This news about Discovery adding sports to Max is a response to that noise. With more people cutting cable year over year, yes, I fully believe the strategy in these buildings is preparing their services to live stream sports.

Cable companies are in a tougher spot than the streamers IMO.

That doesn’t happen but you are a few seconds behind. (I got 1 gig mbps speed over Fiber, and Ethernet connected and it’s still 5-10 seconds behind).

You're 100% right. Instead of admitting that that they fukked up, scaling back or more realistically consolidating with other streaming services they are throwing one last Hail Mary and the best move they have left, live sports.

Although I disagree with you that sports leagues (other than the NFL) won't go online, if the check is big enough and it allows them some games on local channels they will take the money.

Streamers are cannibalizing each other and hemorrhaging money but they're also hurting cable channels, so who knows what's gonna be left standing after they settle the streaming wars.

I have to think this is partly in response to the writer and actors strikes. ABC just green lit airing MNF this season all year long. A way to hedge some of their losses this year and find programming under their umbrella

Why would the leagues allow this? If I'm NBA/MLB, I'd want to charge extra for streaming rights. So unless they pay more, they shouldn't get to add to the streaming platform.
