Their profiting off targetted ads has killed local news

Now you have people getting their news on FB and algorithms put them to mainly big right wing pages that game that shid and has brain washed so many people.

Removing the section 230 liability protections for profiting off targetted ads will help fix this problem
Are you suggesting it's the primary role of government to determine how people get their news via oversight? :francis:

Twitter, YouTube, etc are some of the primary vectors for people to ingest "independent journalist."

The decline of local news was happening before the rise of Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Studies have shown its decline going back to the advent of eBay and other online service offerings that undercut the classified page.

But this is a flaw in the business model ran by most of the local papers at the time.

But there is a role government should play and that's properly funding independent journalism.

If the people choose to ignore it, well, :yeshrug:, that's part of democracy.

People are so weird about this "MY page" shyt.

"Your" Twitter or FB or IG

DOES NOT BELONG TO YOU

When you eat out you do so at "your" table but most people understand that its ultimately the restaurant's table. They relinquish it with no fuss at the end of the exchange.

Everyone keeps talking like Twitter is the same thing as having heat in the winter. Or clean water.

Lets say Twitter is a club. And everyone loves going to the club. But your dumb ass takes a dump on the bar. Once a month for a whole summer. And then they tell you you can't come in anymore.

But where will I go to have fun with all the people? Shoulda been thinking about that while you were shytting everywhere

This article echoes how I reacted in the main thread when social media banned Trump. Though they were right in banning him, something is wrong that a “tech” platform has that much power to control speech the way it does. Especially when they incited Trump and his follower for years with the algorithms, along with the monopolistic issues.

I got back and forth on this topic, but I believe it boils down to the bolded. It's wildly obvious that our laws aren't structured properly for tech and big data. I've found it insane that different people have different google results even for the same searches. And companies like Facebook promise to do xyz in relation to security, etc. but all they want to do is hoover up more and more data, everything else be damned.

These large Tech companies should definitely be more closely regulated. It's just now you have all these anti regulation free market Republicans who suddenly care about how much power Twitter and Facebook have only because it started affecting them. Republicans are constantly on the wrong side of an issue, that when they're finally on the right side, it's for self serving reasons and no one takes them seriously

Cancel culture is pure trash and tech companies need to be closely regulated but nothing done to Trump crossed a line...

Trump was the one that crossed the line when he incited an insurrection on a lie that killed 5 people...

First off, there is a TOS agreement when he setup that account that he had to agree to, he repeatedly violated hat TOS agreement almost daily over the last 4 years...

Secondly, what he got banned for was the equivalent of yelling fire in a movie theatre and starting a stampede that killed 5 people...The 1st amendment does not protect against stupid shyt like that, you would be banned by every movie theatre in the country and thrown in prison if you were to do that...

Who are you having this conversation with? No one said Trump shouldn’t have been banned. :wtf:

This thread is filled with people who either didn't read the article or have the reading comprehension of 3rd graders.

This article is absolutely correct, social media giants have way too much unchecked power and influence on us. They can't be allowed to continue on as they are.

You guys keep repeating that tired cliché about the 1st amendment and government, etc but are missing the entire plot here. People never listen to reason until its too late though :francis:

Too many people on the "left" are cheering it on but what's to stop these same platforms from
removing someone on the left's chance to speak power to the people ?

There's a distinct possibility that this could happen.

which is why all these folks should actually invest that free YouTube money in their own platforms.

its ignorant to think the ban hammer only swings in one direction.
