On Wednesday morning, Walmart workers went on strike in Los Angeles, a year after the first-ever strike in the city against the company.

The strikers will also be joined by community supporters for a rally at 11:30 Pacific time against the company’s practices. That group will call for a minimum of $25,000 a year for all employees, an end to retaliation against workers who have gone on strike or tried to unionize, and more full-time work.

Wednesday’s worker actions are part of strikes and protests against Walmart across the country, with the biggest on Black Friday last year. The most recent strike was in Miami in October. There is likely to be more unrest on Black Friday of this year as well.

In response to today’s actions, a Walmart spokesperson told ThinkProgress that it has 13,000 associates employed in Los Angeles county, “So I think that gives some perspective of how big this demonstration is compared to what Walmart does and means for the community.” He added, “As we’ve seen in the past when this group puts together demonstrations, you see so few associates participating because they understand what it’s like to work for Walmart. It provides associates with more opportunities for career growth and greater economic security for their families than other companies in America.”

President & CEO of Walmart U.S. Bill Simon recently admitted that most of the company’s retail workers make less than $25,000 a year. It employs about a million “associates,” or in-store workers, and of those 475,000 made more than that last year — leaving 525,000 making less.

The company has been accused of retaliating against strikers by firing 20 in June and disciplining 50 others. Other workers have said they were fired, suspended, or disciplined after taking part in strikes. Walmart has disputed that the workers were fired for striking, saying instead that they were violating the attendance policy. The company has also admitted tothreatening workers who look into unionizing stores by saying they could lose their benefits.

When it comes to full-time work, the company says that about 75,000 people are promoted to that status each year and Simon claims that the company is a “majority full-time workforce.” Yet a recent survey found that over half of its locations were only hiring temporary workers, not full-time positions. The lack of a full-time workforce had been leading to empty shelves and customer dissatisfaction, hurting sales, so the company recently decided to add more positions ahead of the holiday season.

Other stores take a different approach and manage to do well financially. Costco, a competitor to Walmart’s Sams Clubs, pays workers $21.96 an hour on average. But it gets much more revenue and profit per employeeand has a higher return for investors. A small Idaho grocery chain named WinCo beats Walmart’s prices yet pays workers more than $11 an hour and offers generous benefits.

They should quit if the pay is trash.

How is that Walmart's problem?
frankly it isnt. walmarts just working the system

but i cant cosign a company where the 5 heirs own more wealth than what? the bottom 20% of this country? encouraging their employees to take government benefits so they dont have to pay them, WHILE getting subsidies to open stores and shyt like that.

the fukkin company has more money than god, due to their excellent business sense. but theres a point where corporate and social responsibilty needs to come into play. im no communist breh but the shyt isnt right

its easy to say "yea they can quit, shoulda worked and went to school, etc" but no society can function without low paid, low skilled workers. who, i should mention, are the people that walmart built the wealth off

it's funny because the more poor and welfare people they hire... especially poor veterans, old poor people, etc. the more 'assistance' and tax breaks they get.

Then they get breaks simply for being a huge company.

Then they get more profit for the least social responsibility they take on. (not that that's their job)

Its actually pretty genius because people don't give a fukkk that low wage workers keep the nation going.

:dahell: Good for them?

Wal-Mart aint changing shyt:heh:
These workers are basically saying i'd rather rely 100% on the state then work for min wage. Which is fine, but far from noble.

You think the CEO of wal-mart dropped a piece of caviar from his gold fork at brunch today? fukk no! these people are playing themselves.
$8/hr >>>> $0/hr period.:birdman:

I bet wal mart closing and adding millions more to the unemployed state dependent pool would make liberals ecstatic. :dead: all the while consumers end up paying a higher price for goods:deadrose:

promote feel good politics breh:pachaha:

At what point does one decide not to become a "low income" worker and move up?

There hasn't been 'most 'of the population of any group on Earth.... at least in recorded history - that has been able to simply 'decide' to move up.

You don't believe that the economic system we have is designed to not have a class in poverty. .... so y question if we should make at least a slight attempt to ensue all Americans are doing OK and that our wealth gaps aren't extremely gross?

While you are busy waving your pom poms for Wal-Mart, they are using your tax dollars to subsidize their profits.

:upsetfavre: Some slippery language here.

What do you consider a "
slight attempt":leostare:
What do you mean exactly when you say "
all"? literally "all" as in every single person? :leostare:
and define "
ok" :leostare:

I don't believe anything is perfect but the American economic system is definitively better than most of the world.
If they don't like they can always quit no?

 No congress is using our tax dollars to subsidize them.

Furthermore libertarians are against all subsidies. Literally all. Every single one. :birdman:
