For the uninitiated (RIP Bankroll)



So how did we get here?

A brief timeline:

The Falcons signed QB Kirk Cousins to a 4 year $180 million contract on March 11th

On April 25th (my birthday BTW ) with the 8th pick the Falcons selected Michael Penix Jr, QB from Washington

Kirk, coming off an Achilles injury in 2023, didn’t play in the preseason. Curiously, Penix only played a quarter of ONE half of a preseason game at Miami.

Fast forward to the season, Kirk’s play had been up and down all season with noticeable rust and physical limitations on display for all to see. Despite this, Kirk led the Falcons to 1st place in the division and a 6-3 record. That all fell apart with a disastrous 1-4 stretch including a 4 game losing streak where Kirk had 1 TD vs 9 INTs, a passer rating by of 63.8 and only averaging 237 yards passing per game and most importantly the Falcons lost their lead in the NFC South.

Now enter Penix, who wasn’t supposed to play this year, not only taking over for an ineffective Cousins, but being given the keys to the franchise in a short week at home vs a struggling NYG team.

I don’t think he’ll be asked to pass that much (I think even 20 attempts might be too much) in his first start but 3 TDs in his first start would be incredible
