Im not talking back that far. who from his 2009 class still move units?

at his peak he was only a 3x Gold artist. So I dont know why this even a subject.

if your going off the freshmen class..the only 2 active artists are cudi who still moves units..and currensy who went the pure underground/independent route like 8 years ago so he’s content with whatever he’s moving

wale is STILL trying to breakthrough which is why he be having Chris brown singles

you can talk about how sales/streams don’t matter anymore..but the ARTISTS & LABELS are the ones who care the most …they live for the first week numbers

until they flop and all of a sudden talk about how it’s not about the numbers it’s about giving their fanbase what they want and all that bullshyt

low key drake has been preparing for when he does fall off sales wise for like 3-4 albums now…which is why he always talks about his albums like months before even having release dates, about being done in certain spaces in his life, how he tried to tap into something different, etc…it’s to have a built in excuse for when he does cool off and moves 60k first week, he can say it was just a passion project

J Cole is the epitome me of regular… I don’t understand the difference in success besides The JayZ co-sign
Cole has a bigger stanbase.

Cole doesn’t really have casual fans like that. What’s the last Cole to really have an impact on rap

I've never listened to a wale album. He has had a couple cool singles I messed with, and a couple coop verses on those mmg albums.

:yeshrug:

wale has a good discography. Only 2 terrible albums and a bunch of great mixtapes

I didn't know an album was out until I came on here and saw the thread. I think everyone was shocked by the sudden release. Probably wasn't made with the intention to sell. His previous albums had a much bigger marketing push.

He's too plain. It's very rare, if ever, a person sells or pops that doesn't have a lane. He's not a street rapper, he's not looked at as a ladies rapper, a party rapper, a spiritual rapper, a flossy rapper, drug dealer rapper, a boom bap rapper, a conscious rapper, pod head rapper, college rapper, nothing. He's just kind of...there. And his music sounds like it. I don't get any feel from him. Fans like to identify with the person first and foremost, that's what gravitates them more to your music.
IMO it ultimately comes down to delivery/approach, Wale's style and approach doesnt lure people. Cole has his method and that has led him to be where he is at now. Wale has nothing to him that aids him to have people pay attention
he doesnt have that ability to relate to people like Cole, nor is he lyrically advance to lean onto for being the lyrical rapper to make up for lack of style or artistry, his flow and cadence is mid to.

hes a good rapper but theres nothing about him stylistically or artistically that will make someone be fascinated with him.

Like Joe Budden... Wale will be much more popular when he transitions to doing media content and culture hot takes.

The ironic thing is that like Budden, Wale soiled his mixtape momentum and hype when he came out the gates with that Lady Gaga record (that's his Pump It Up). A lot of people tuned him out after that, the MMG deal gave him another shot and he had some big songs, but you still can't really say he ascended much status wise after all these years.
