The whole, "we need to preserve this history as a reminder" argument is garbage and deflects away from what a lot of people's actual problem with these statues is; They glorify racist traitors to the country.
A statue dedicated to Nat Turner or Barbara johns in Virginia is more effective at that than any Confederate one, but you'll never hear these "preserve history" people say that.

They need to put up a statute of General U.S. Grant, because he won the Civil War. As President he crushed the Klu Klux Klan and he ushered in the Reconstruction Era and the passage of the 15th Amendment. He did more for Civil Rights than any other U.S. President.

lived in Richmond in the late 90s and I remember its was a major fight to get a Arthur Ashe statue on that Monument Ave in Richmond
the confederate crazies fought it like hell but they finally put it up at the end but he sticks out like a sour thumb because there's 5 confederate hero statues in front of him starting with Robert E Lee's statue that all look majestic and Arhur's statue is horrible with him holding a racket in one hand and a book in the other

Edit: I live in Richmond, VA. There’s some more statues that can be torn down out here.
