Jack Garofolo (1923-2004) was a photographer for Paris Match magazine in the 1960’s and 70’s. During one trip to the United States in the summer of 1970, Garofalo captured these amazing photographs of Harlem and it’s residents, really exposing the feeling of the neighborhood. When he got back to Paris after spending 6 weeks here, the magazine placed his images on the cover of the October 1970 issue.

The cacs are going to do the same thing in Detroit and years down the line there going to have pictures likes these. Nobody had jobs in Harlem; just like in Detroit, so they could not keep up their neighborhood. Now, all of a sudden the cacs come in with the gentrification; and clean everything up and bring jobs for their people.

Brehs, it's such a shame what gentrification has done to Harlem. I was driving around through Harlem with my father earlier today, and he was shocked at how much it's changed in the 2 years since he's down south. It's as if Harlem has lost it's essence & flavor. Yes, their are still a lot of black people living there, but it's not the same. Anybody who grew up in the 80's & 90's can attest to that.
