Above the fray.
i'm shocked that in times of great income inequality and inflation people are committing robberies. :unimpressed:
Smilies and deflections are not it.

Just concede the point. Crime is up. Not because I said so, or because the news covers it, but because crimes are being committed. (and victims are reporting it to the police)

Crime is up nation wide. Additionally, despite the uptick, the coverage is disproportionate to the rate of crimes committed. NYC still remains one of the safest big cities in the country - you have to consider the population size of it as well. This is part of an intentional agenda to brand "liberal" cities as out of control hell holes by conservative owned mass media. The solutions to true crime reduction, not band aid approaches, is something they're not particularly interested in. Only fearmongering to increase the police state.

It's not the conservative owned mass media who are committing these violent crimes, though.

Public safety is a legitimate concern, especially in a city were crime had been reduced dramatically. Of course actual upward trending crime rates would be a concern. Adams became mayor directly because public safety became one of the top issues during the last race.

Remember, there are cameras everywhere in the city. In addition to people with cellphones. The clip shown in OP was shot by a regular person out trying to enjoy the weather. Unfortunately residents filming brazen crimes in broad daylight is hardly a rarity in NYC these days. Neither are the alerts from Citizen App that tells people when actual crimes occur in their vicinity.
Some times members here post these stories before the local tv news even covers it

"Bu bu but the media/scaremongering" is not it. Real crimes are occurring to real victims. And residents are often learning about these crimes in real time.

I don't think I said that public safety wasn't a legitimate concern, nor that upticks in crime aren't concerning. I was giving a broad view analysis of the uptick in comparison to the coverage as well as the fact that the real solutions to steeply reduce crime (hint: it's not adding more police to a dept that already has as many police as some nations' standing armies and a bloated budget as well) is not on the agenda of mass media.

As an example, take the coverage of all of the mass shoplifting that was happening. A concern to be sure, but infinitely small compared to the trillions wasted in unecessary wars, and tax avoidance over the past 20+ years. Which do you think gets the overwhelming bulk of the coverage and why? Extreme crime, food insecurity, homelessness and most societal ills are a choice a society as rich as the US is makes as acceptable to preserve capital being in the hands of as few as possible.

I'm not waving away increases in crime, nor am I not taking into account the effects it has on real life victims. However, if we truly want to be solution based, it starts with in depth analysis of the issues, what would be most effective in crime reduction and not sensationalism.
