ive read a lot about the rape of nanking and the japanese atrocities in WWII. these are some of the most horrific things in the twentieth century. but at the same time i think that the populations support for that is enhanced by the pressure of living in a authoritarian state at war. you should read barefoot gen, it was written by a survivor of the bomb in hiroshima whose father was a pacifist and criticized the countrys war mobilization (and got shat on while the war was going on for it). it really shows the insane cultlike attitudes people were forced to adopt. also im not comfortable with the idea that the infants and children who died in those bombings “deserved” them. one guy in here said those people deserved to die which i think is fukked because they werent even old enough to resistYeah but they used to brag about their fukkery in local papers. but i think the biggest issue is people in america never bring up things like the rape of nanking EXCEPT for when they want to justify nuking civilians. the US government doesnt even want to acknowledge it because they dont want to hurt their relations with japan
i also understand the military argument that more lives were saved overall than if the US straight up invaded japan. i think thats probably true but people also forget the USSR invaded japan at the same time as the nukes. so they wouldve had to fight on two fronts vs two armies. i always found that interesting
