Vice Documentaries appreciation thread

Liberia is the most fukked up one of all of them. 10 year olds smoking heroin breh.

I'm torn about them. On one hand, this is real "gonzo" journalism and you don't see much of what they show you elsewhere, but on the other hand, there is definitely some serious sensationalism and white/Eurocentric finger-pointing that is reminiscent of travel literature from a few centuries ago where brave, white explorers would detail their experiences among cannibals and other "savages" for the entertainment of the masses.

do you have any specific examples of this? From my experiences watching Vice they always try to be very nice and courteous to the people and cultures they are interviewing/investigating and in many instances Vice has exposed horrors in hopes that it will make a difference (like North Korean slave camps in Russia).

say what you want about their snarky articles -even though i like those as well; some people are just too emotionally invested in what others write- their videos are where it's at.

Their ideas are great as they go to the most extreme places to show us what its all about, but I dont like the way some of their docs are executed

plus they always have this we're better than you attitude which kinda ruins a lot of their docs for me...

I still check them out cause they'll always have some good ass videos... but you can tell most of them are stuck up rich white boys who only do it for the thrill and not the journalism.

hipster bottom feeders and sensationalists. they were running some video about some allegedly hard drinking part of africa, meanwhile this country still doesnt compare to the hardest drinking countries in europe. it is clearly an organization built to exploit a sideshow interest in "the other".

the only good thing i can say for them is that this kind of filming isnt easy, especially on internet video budgets, and sometimes they take personal risk.

yeah its mixed, some are free and full length, some like this one you gotta pay, but its pretty cheap, i think its like 1$

when i saw the dudes entrance in the preview i was like i gotta see this
