Mario & Luigi are now the Super Billionaire Bros: Weekend Box Office Results (Apr. 28-30)
Let's not bury the ledge. The Super Mario Bros. Movie has grossed $1,022,473,825. That's 1 billion dollars. Illumination's, Minions: The Rise of Gru, came close last year, with $939.6M. Mario and Luigi got the job done. That was aided with a $40M 4th weekend, the best ever for a Universal movie and the 7th best ever at the domestic box office. Mario beat out Spider-Man: No Way Home's $32.6M 4th weekend with ease. It's looking up at the Avatar and Top Gun sequels and their 4th weekend tallies of $45.8M and $44.6M, respectively. It'll probably be a little less, though, come tomorrow.
What about animation? Its $490M running tally passes Finding Dory's $486.2M, to become the 2nd highest grossing animated movie of all time, domestically. Incredibles 2 and its $608.5M sits at the top.
Evil Dead Rise remained in 2nd place, only down 50.2% for a cool $12.2M. That's a great horror hold but nowhere near Smile's 18% decline in its 2nd weekend. It's much more in line with The Black Phone's 48% hold which coincidentally, also equalled a $12.2M weekend. But The Black Phone was sitting on $47.4M after its second weekend, while Evil Dead Rise has totalled $44.4M. So maybe it's looking at something in the $80-85M range when it finishes its run.We got newcomer, Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. taking 3rd place with $6.8M. It touts an A CinemaScore but I think I remember seeing a trailer for it once? Or maybe I just remember the long ass title? It only did $600K in previews. BoxOfficePro was projecting $13M. They missed the mark.
Oh, just remembered where I know the title from.
John Wick: Chapter 4 held down 4th place for the 2nd weekend in a row, with $5M. Its $176.1M domestic running total makes it the highest grossing entry in the John Wick franchise. That's how you go out on a high note. At the head of the table.
You do now.
Closing out the top 5 was a 40 year old classic, from a galaxy far, far, away: Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi brought home $4.6M in the 40th year anniversary re-release. It did $45.4M back in 1997 when George Lucas came through with the special effects laden Special Edition. It only played in 475 theaters in 2023 but was the top average grosser this weekend, at $9.8K per theater. So, in that sense, the Ewoks were mightier than the Mario Bros.
Notables
Sony's, Big George Foreman: The Miraculous Story of the Once and Future Heavyweight Champion of the World, only did $3M From 3,054 theaters, despite the A- CinemaScore. It's aight, George. That Foreman Grill with the two top bun warmers was the truth. The Pope's Exorcist finished in 12th place with $1.75M. It has an $18M running total.
Renfield placed 14th with $1.2M. It's up to $16.3M.
Beau Is Afraid added 1,160 theaters, as it expanded to 2,125, yet it was down 46% and only made $1.4M.
