Since Venezuela wasn't gonna depend on heavy foreign investment (and therefore, influence), they had no choice but to rely on oil. It was the only resource they had to build their society quickly.

Socialism requires central planning, but not all acts of central planning count as socialism...:manny:
That said, i think it was ill advised policies from central planners that did them in.
Whatever ism people want to attach to it is fine...
