But why? Does that save them money? Don't they already own the machines? It's not like they're buying more of them. They're taking ones they already own and deactivating them. How does that cut cost? Does it save on electricity only?Business Insider

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for the United States Postal Service. I appreciate hearing from you, and I apologize for the delayed response.
I agree with you. The United States Postal Service is an essential service - enshrined in the U.S. Constitution - that Americans rely on for their daily needs, and we must ensure that it has the resources it needs to protect its workers and provide affordable and reliable service.
I am hearing concerns from many Marylanders that the recent process changes implemented by the new Postmaster General, Louis DeJoy, have resulted in significant delays in delivery times. As you may know, the Postmaster General has cut overtime for USPS employees and limited the use of sorting machines. I have deep concerns that he implemented these policies without properly consulting with USPS unions and employees or analyzing the impact on service. I oppose any attempt by the Trump Administration to politicize or undermine the functioning of the Postal Service. I have written to the Postmaster General to demand answers on his political sabotage of the Post Office, and worked with my colleagues in the Senate to open an investigation. My office has also been and in touch with local post offices and postal workers in Maryland regarding the delays in our area. I recently held an event at the USPS Baltimore Processing and Distribution Center to discuss the problems created by these changes and to urge the Trump Administration to fix them.
Thanks to overwhelming public outcry opposing these changes and our efforts to hold the Postmaster General accountable we were able to force him to halt these changes. However, he must return the sorting machines that were removed and restore the Postal Service to its previous service standards. Congress must take immediate action to stop the destruction of the Postal Service and Leader McConnell should immediately bring the Senate back in session to deal with this crisis and ensure that the Postal Service meets its previous service standard.
I was pleased to see that the House of Representatives is planning to re-convene on Saturday August 22nd to vote on the Delivering for America Act, which would prohibit the Postal Service from implementing any changes to the operations or level of service it had in place on January 1, 2020, until the COVID-19 pandemic has ended, stop the removal of drop boxes and sorting machines, and require the USPS to ensure that election mail is processed and cleared the same day it is received. The Act also provides the Postal Service with $25 billion in emergency funding.
I share your concerns that the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) did not include much needed emergency funding for the Postal Service, and only provided the authority for the Treasury Department to extend a $10 billion loan to the Postal Service. I urged Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to make the loan without onerous conditions, but as a condition of receiving the loan the Postal Service will be required to turn over proprietary information about some of its largest contracts to the Treasury Department.
In order to ensure that USPS upholds it mission, I support including $25 billion in emergency funding for the Postal Service in the next coronavirus relief package and was pleased to see that it was included in the HEROES Act. I also support long-term changes to the excessive retiree benefit pre-funding requirements that have burdened the USPS budget.
Please be assured that I will fight to support the Postal Service in future COVID-19 relief packages and to ensure that it can sustain itself and provide high-quality service for years to come. I will also continue to fight against efforts to privatize the Postal Service.
Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. Please do not hesitate to contact me whenever I may be of service.
Sincerely,
Chris Van Hollen

Of course but he and the Dems need to hold the line for USPS funding in any legislative priorities in the next few weeksThat senator is a democrat. He's powerless. Nothing goes down in the senate unless Mitch lets it.
That bill the house passed just now is as dead as the heroes act. If the dems want anything to pass they’ll have to either give into the republicans demands or take the senate in the elections. I doubt the republicans ever cave on any of this in the senate. Eventually the dems will find themselves being held responsible. Republican voters are far more loyal than democrat voters after all.Of course but he and the Dems need to hold the line for USPS funding in any legislative priorities in the next few weeks
They're going to steal another election right in front of our faces
