“I couldn’t quite figure out why their after-the-fact apologies deepened the wound. But one of my friends explained it to me the best this morning: ‘Because now you know, the first thing they see you as is subhuman.’ ”
I was just thinking about this this morning.
"You're one of the good ones" "I like you but not the others" are supposed compliments from racists.
Lets entertain this thinking, at the end of the day, you still hold bigoted views and just because you happened to know someone is a good person, doesn't mean your fellow bigots who don't know that person is going to treat them with respect and dignity. The first thing, just like you, they see is skin color and they don't have time to get to a person before mistreating and passing judgment.
It adds another layer of stress to the whole situation as you realize that this only further highlights the fact you can't be judged as an individual.
