thats a good point. if black writers who had political awareness were given platforms to cover and critiqque black music, that would be dope. wasnt to long ago that was the case. greg tate, armond white, nelson george, harry allen. all these cats were the prominent rap scribes in the 80's and part of the 90's. they were approaching that thing with an awareness of black history in terms of music, culture, politics etc. these new critics, as long as the music make their ass shake, its all good.

i don't think cole can be compared to malcolm they are on totally different levels:

malcolm x was an orphan who went to prison for larceny and upon his release turned his life around. growing up malcolm was a drug dealer, a pimp, and a male prostitute. later he was assassinated.

j cole is an army brat raised by german women and given a free ride through college. the hardest work he ever did was answering phones. right after college he got a nice comfortable record deal.
