It sounds like they planned to explode a nuclear weapon ON the moon; not trying to blow up the moon which would be impossible using a man made nuclear weapon.
The largest bomb ever detonated was 50 megatons (over 3,000x more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima) it would have barely dented the moon's surface.
To be fair, this article should give you an idea how few fukks both the US and the Soviet Union gave when it came to nuclear weapons. Between using nukes to create lakes, setting off nukes in space that create massive EMPs, Tsar Bomba (the 50 megaton SOB mentioned by Melt_Man), and holding war games close to an actual nuclear explosion, would it have been that surprising if we topped the madness off by creating a new crater or two on the Moon?
Only cacs would wanna blow up the moon, shyt I'm surprised they didn't attach a nuke to the Mars rover just in case.
It's not a bomb though.Pretty sure it runs on nuclear energy but I'm not positive.
