Of course not. That doesnt mean its respectable to jump into an army. Just like it wouldnt be respectable to jump into a gang even for those same reasons you just mentioned. I dont judge though :obama:
Its an appealing option for those with few options to choose from.

My life would be very different had I not enlisted :to:

And as I said, I do not judge. That was your choice and hopefully it has worked out. I just dont think we hold the same respect for gang members that make similar statements. Why do you think that is when they're both fighting pointlessly? (Well that is if you went to war)

:comeon: I think you're letting our interventionist policies shape your opinion of the military. The military is a tool for defense, that is being used incorrectly.

Ideally, you can separate the 2. But realistically you cannot. So whats the problem?

Gangs wont pay for your college education, or help you find a career path when you get out. Our military does some foul shyt I know, and the country was founded by racists I know, but I'd much rather have protection from this military that to have them coming after my ass. The military is an ugly gig (sometimes), but someone has to do it.

Its easy to say just let the white boys do it, but you can pick up some real life survival skills there. So people need it for the discipline they gain, some do it for the money.

I know you say you're not judging, so dont take this as an attack of sorts, I just wish more people understood the benefits to the military for blacks. It doesnt have to be a lifetime commitment, and i dont think you should choose infantry, but if you're young with no path, the military is a viable option.

Before I get to my thoughts on this, let me say that I agree partially with what you have said. It can set people up for life. It can teach them valuable tools that they can apply for the rest of their life as you suggested. But at what cost? Lets say you have a son and you send him into the military and he goes to war. Then what? He went to fight a war to make some white men richer and secure the resources the war is over? Is that a beneficial fight for your son? I wouldnt think so. And then if he loses his life over it? :sadcam:

And thats specifically my problem. That blacks (and other races for that matter) are going to fight in wars, that makes rich men even richer. Do these men send themselves into battle? Nope. What about their children? Nah. So why should we do it? I dont see it.

There are benefits. But these benefits are undermined by the negatives in my opinion. Especially when the wars are over BS. Now Im speaking of a "going to war" perspective. There are branches that do not go to war Im assuming? Nonetheless, supporting that kind of system seems hypocritical coming from blacks. But if each one looks for anyway THEY and only THEY can get ahead, we'll continue stepping on each other

I understand that 100% bro, I do. But most of the military is not dying, and I do agree that our wars and conflicts of the last 15-20 years have been bullshyt and not worth dying for. But I can respect the choice to not go. Hell, I made a conscious decision not to go. However, I understand why kids in the inner city are so heavily recruited. For a lot of them, it seems like there isnt a better route to go.

I honestly wish we had better career guidance in our inner cities, so kids wouldn't feel forced to make that type of decision, and the only kids going are those that really wanted to go. But that's currently not the world we live in.

Edit: My nephew just signed up for the army. Calvary scout... It hurt me when he made the choice because I really dont think it's something he should do, because he probably will go fight in a bullshyt war, and leave with no real world experience or a career path. But he felt like it's what he wanted to do, so trust, I know exactly what you mean. He should have used the military more to his advantage.

That second paragraph is where its at. We need better communities. Then again, I dont believe this country is ours and eventually blacks and anyone else in it, will go down with the country if they're living in it at the time of the next collapse. With that said, I agree. Better leadership and guidance, ensures that kids are making smarter decisions.

I just looked at the calvary scout description and yea doesnt sound too good. I hope he stays safe and makes it out. Did you try telling him about what wars are really about? I would have thought that would be motivation enough to deter someone but then again, it depends on the situation hes in. I understand that desperate times call for desperate measures
