Classic album but I don't think it should always be the go to album for showing (1) what the 90s was about as far as hip hop and (2) the first album fans like to knock whenever the 90s gets brought up. It set a standard in its time though which cannot be disputed. But now, I feel like its an album thats become a scapegoat for fans to converse about for no reason.

see if you listen to it now, or even a year or a few years later, it's not the same IMPACT. you listening and comparing it to biggie. well biggie wasn't out when this came out. so the people loving illmatic, never heard no damn biggie album. meanwhile, biggie had the position of being able to hear illmatic and improve on that. so did everyone else
when illmatic dropped, NOBODY was spitting like nas. he wasn't the kendrick of his time. he was the rakim of his time. he was the one taking rakim's style, and then pushing it next level up. he ushered in the sound of the 90s before anyone else did it. then after that came the wu's, biggie's, jay's, etc. but first it was nas
and you talking to someone who ain't really even on nas like that. but i remember when that shyt dropped. i was in philly at the time. up north, east coast wise, that changed EVERYTHING. and back in that time, up north, east coast music was all that mattered over there
