Also, in general, expect to see far fewer Chinese students in general at American universities and elsewhere

The students attending are generally from wealthy families or children of Chinese govt. officials

For decades, the CCP encouraged this as these students would come away with top level education and new ideas, ventures to bring home

China is now more fearful of the ideas these students are brining home and wants to encourage ideological purity (no western influence or thoughts that endanger their stranglehold over the ppl )

The students with these foreign held degrees would get priority treatment for govt. jobs that come with stable income and prestige. According to this, the CCP has flipped the script on this decades long tradition and they are being ignored or shunned
