Any app based in China or Russia should be sus from the gate. I use intellij which is developed in Moscow and I feel some kind of way about using that even though the source code is publicly available on github.

A chinese social media app though? Then to still be using it after it's revealed they don't even want black people dominating the platform

I saw someone mention that China is a leader in machine learning research and how tik tok and zoom could be training their ML models. they basically use ML already in China from everything to monitor kids being focused in school to tracking people in real time. Even if you barely use the app, it has access to your mic and could be picking up conversations , sending it to servers in china where they train models how to respond to speech patterns and common answers to questions (gmail already does this now) .

If you use any app that does not need internet access to function properly, you best disable internet access then

Tik Tok or Zoom are apps that need internet access, they are made in China and had security issues again and again. If you need a video conference call and you share sensitive data in that call you better look for a better app. Zoom had problems back like a year ago where it was possible that by visiting certain sites it would automatically access your camera via zoom app. Zoom also was used for bitcoin mining, making your computer hella slow. And the problem that many video conference apps have - possibility of hackers hijacking your conference call. Zoom claims they fixed some of the issues, but go ahead trust them if you want.

Yup, chinese or russian apps usually have more malware as well. Poorly made apps with security issues. I see folks saying well google collects data too and all that. These damn chinese apps are way less secure.

All those face apps are made in china too, collecting image data and then providing ads based on your pictures, they can even determine what is your location if you take many images outside and then give you location based ads.

When you use a smartphone an ad block is a must, for the very basic protection, also disabling internet access to apps that really don't need it, but were actually allowed to use! Like for example keyboard app, you don't need keyboard app accessing internet, but it's made for better machine learning experience
