Always
The word picnic has an interesting history. The meaning of words change over time. People use words incorrectly all day everyday. Life goes on.

Tom would rather be a slave than commit the sin of lying.
This. Tom embodied that "we's sick boss" faux-loyalty to the slave owners.

And Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote that character to garner sympathy from northern whites about the fugitive slave law. He was meant to be childlike in his faith and loyalty (drawing on Christian tropes).

If you want a book written by a black man during this time of slavery, check out Blake by Martin Delany or Iola Leroy by Frances EW Harper

Not only did they kill him but tarnished his name so that it's used as an insult by his own people. Cacs are renowned for changing history to suit their narrative.

And we play along flattering ourselves about slurs being used as terms of endearment when used among ourselves. Or supporting musicians who perpetuate stereotypes and provide a soundtrack that glorifies self genocide. Those same artists are pushed by white owned media.

Uncle Tom went from hero to traitorous
N!gger went from slur to n!gga and is used freely
Music went from Self Destruction and Night of the Living Bassheads to insert #9,999 crack metaphor here

It just goes on and on and on with a ton of other variables.
