S VEGAS -- Dana White is predicting between 1 million and 1.2 million pay-per-view buys for UFC 189. Yet, even if the UFC gets that, he joked, it might not actually make any money on the card headlined by Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor.

"Over a million PPV buys and we'll probably break even," White said. "That's how much money we're spending. We're spending lot of money."

White unveiled the Aldo-McGregor teasers and commercials that will air globally beginning Saturday in a closed press conference Friday at MGM Grand. The spots will air during the NBA Finals and other big events worldwide. They were produced by Digital Domain, a visual arts company that has won seven Academy Awards and has done special effects for movies like Titanic, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Transformers.

"It's the most expensive commercial we've ever shot, but without a doubt the most bad ass commercial we've ever done," White said.

White said he bought eight tickets to the huge boxing match between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao earlier this month and came away disappointed -- not so much by the fight, but by the production quality. The UFC boss panned boxing for just using the fight as a money grab and not investing money back into the sport.

"A typical boxing event where you rip all the money out of it," White said. "Not only did they not have any value in the production during the show, the fight sucked. It's typical boxing. It's what they always do. They're never worried about the future of the sport."

He believes the UFC is doing that with UFC 189. White said there will be 10 more Embedded episodes leading into the card following up on the World Tour that Aldo and McGregor did in April. The World Tour Embedded did more than 13 million views, per White. There will also be a 30-minute television special that will air everywhere called Bad Blood: Aldo vs. McGregor.

White said the UFC has spent more money on media marketing on UFC 189 than any other card and he expects it to be the biggest MMA card of the year.

"What we want this to be is everything that Mayweather-Pacquiao was not," White said.

White said that early estimates have 25 percent of UFC 189 ticket sales coming from Ireland and the United Kingdom and 17 percent from Brazil. He expects to earn more than $7 million from ticket sales, which would be the UFC's best gate at MGM Grand.

where does it say HE JOKED

There are three teaser spots the UFC and Digital Domain did for Aldo-McGregor and one larger scale commercial. They will premiere Saturday during UFC 187.

That's what the person writing the article put in, that's not what dana said because they are MMA dikk riders who hate to admit their own a sinking shi

here's another article with the same quote and story, and mentions nothing of him making a joke

Dana White has revealed the promotional push the company is giving to UFC 189 at a press conference at the MGM Grand on Friday.

“Over a million PPV buys and we’ll probably break even,” White said. “That’s how much money we’re spending. We’re spending lot of money.”

Dana White went on to say that Oscar winning visual arts company Digital Domain is producing a commercial for the fight and teasers will air during UFC 187. “It’s the most expensive commercial we’ve ever shot, but without a doubt the most bad ass commercial we’ve ever done,” added White.

White also brought up comparisons to the Mayweather- Pacquiao fight that took place in Las Vegas earlier this month. White left the event unimpressed with both the production values and the fight itself and promises that the UFC’s showcase event will be different “What we want this to be is everything that Mayweather-Pacquiao was not,” White said.

In addition to the commercial the UFC will air a 30 minute television special called Bad Blood: Aldo vs. McGregor and there will be 10 more Embedded episodes to capitalise upon the success of the World Tour that Aldo and McGregor embarked on to promote the fight.

White also divulged estimates that suggest 25 percent of UFC 189 ticket sales are coming from Ireland and the United Kingdom and 17 percent from Brazil. The UFC has spent more money on marketing on UFC 189 than any other card and they expect it to be the biggest MMA card of the year.

The joke will be this event doing 1.2 million buys, because it's not happening

Why would he make a joke like that, did you hear the audio, so if I posted that other article first, you would still think he was joking
or were you swayed by a third party who put in their own input after posting the article on their own site

I guess he was joking about not making money off the reebok that deal, was that an exaggerating

Anybody can see that he was being sarcastic. It isn't rocket science. Get yourself an education, preferably past the 8-9th grade.

That's not true because I just posted the same thing from another site who mentioned nothing about a joke

so was he being sarcastic about the reebok that deal, because that's ridiculous, them over spending on promotion is not far fetched

I think it's hilarious that it's literally just one guy doing all the articles that mention boxing for the New Yorker for the past few months. The guy plugged his own article in this one :heh: They really have no one else? But good writing anyway

I won't lie, I watch more MMA than I do boxing. And I'm supposedly more of a boxing fan. The event on Saturday was spectacular... yes I like shorter more action packed fights, yes I like how its packaged, yes I hate the politics involved in boxing and how there's just one decent fight a week because they're trying to squeeze every cent of money out.

UFC is easier to watch - you get FNF level fights in the beginning, Shobox level fights after, HBO undercards for a few fights, then get the main event. So much easier to follow everything and see the whole range of fighters involved. Even in the weakened UFC era.

In boxing you get B fights like Degale/Dirrell and Garcia/Peterson on TV and are expected to bow down and thank whoever is responsible when these aren't even attractive fights in the first place.

breh i can rock with what youre saying in terms of wanting more action packed fights but shorter? :patrice:...i like my boxing fights to have a little distance on them..as long as there's significant activity going on...if a war/slugfest breaks and it goes long..its a W all around...the only time i want to see a short boxing fight is when mismatches are made (garcia-salka) that insult my boxing intelligence..then i want to see that shyt end early so i can do something else
