People can blame Brexit but trade apprenticeships have been declining for decades in the UK. And being a tradesman isn't a particularly sexy job even tho it pays well but the hours are long and you have to be a willing grafter. Do the younger generations want to get up at 5-6am 5 days a week when it's easier to do a 5-6 min social media video in the warmth of their own room.

The article even says there was a loss of 40-50% of the work force after 2008 financial crash. People moves out of the country or changed. My friend uncle went from Loft Conversions too a Carpet Cleaning business.

It’s not just Brexit that’s heavily impacted the construction industry, the IR35 tax laws brought in by the last government has had a major impact due to a lot of construction workers historically being independent contractors. The new tax laws removed the financial benefit to being a contractor which has resulted in a lot of people leaving the industry.

If the Labour government had any balls, they’d re-enter the EU and repeal IR35 but we know they won’t.

Only hope we have for getting back into the EU is Trump implementing those tariffs :lolbron:

I had contractors (Project Controls) working on HS2. They were on £500+ p/d 6 month renewable contract which worked out roughly £96-100k a year. When IR35 came in when companies wanted perm employees they were only offering £60-70k before tax.

When IR35 kicked in, the company I was working for at the time reassessed all contractors to inside IR35 and then passed on the employers NI cost and took holiday pay contribution out of everyone‘s salaries. Contractors were damn near getting 50% of their pay taxed and needless to say, everyone left within a year.

I’m not sure of the particulars but members of the EU have already said they’re willing to open talks with the UK. Seems like it’s all on Labour to actually get the ball rolling.
We basically gotta pay to rejoin

What numpties
We had it sweet We had the benefits of EU trade and movement all the while trading in EURO and Sterling

increase pay and offer free trade school education, that should resolve their labor shortage.
