I disagree. Have you recently seen a black and white movie? back then the standard of beauty for actors was much higher. I mean look at some of the women these days that are getting the spotlight in hollywood. The best looking ones aren't getting enough shine(ex.Sharon Leal, Alyson Michalka, Charlize Theron)

And that's rare as hell...that's why she was such a sensation. People were basically saying "she's so ugly but she has such a beautiful voice"

I think in Hollywood you need an original look. So to me if you ain't the best looking actor or actress and you can act good you're actually at an advantage. For example....

Ugliness is subjective but if we're going off looks alone, this woman:

should not be getting more shine than this woman:

This woman is not getting enough shine as someone like Adele but she looks better by comparison and has a better or equal voice IMO
