That's the curse of all comedians. Over time they start wanting to become less self deprecating, less silly, and more serious. Because they want their flowers after a certain point, and don't just want to be seen as a clown im guessing. Murphy even changed how he laughs because people found it funny

Good observation, I saw this, but I never consciously realized it. Damn near EVERY comedian goes through this arc...kinda sad actually.

For people that make jokes at everyone, everything, on every occasion (and I shoot them bail on almost everything) they start to really get thin-skinned once they get that third or fourth HBO or Netflix special.

Interesting take. I think being the clown gets old after a while. You as a man always want to be taken seriously first. Paul Mooney got his jokes off but always kept a political element as well so he wasn’t seen as just a clown.
