I haven't watched it, but I randomly heard an interview with the co-creator when I was driving and the origin story is crazy.
He was a waiter and wannabe actor in LA who wasn't getting anywhere, met another struggling actor on the set of a horror movie and they got an idea to write a sitcom created, written, produced, directed by, and starring themselves, shot the pilot for $200 and pitched it to networks. Then they chose the network who would just let them do whatever they wanted.
Now it's been on the air for 18 seasons and is the longest-running sitcom ever by a large margin.
