I've heard/read people like Brown, Akon and some other singers referred to as rappers.

They only call them rappers when they want to sensationalise negative shyt. No one is gonna take "A free concert with U.S. RnB singer Akon in a Danish shopping mall ended in a violent melee on Wednesday" seriously. Sounds too pussified....
