The biggest thing I can say about Kobe is this (and this thread is an example of it)...

Usually when celebrities die, even really big ones, you get the outpouring of sadness but often a lot of people just join in for the clout, and you know they didnt give a fukk about that man while he was living. You saw a lot of that after Nipsey got killed.

But this Kobe shyt is authentic. Anybody who fukked with sports or the culture had strong feelings about Kob, even the people who hated on Kobe had strong feelings and had to respect that man and his work ethic. This is Mike Jack levels where all of the pain felt with this loss is genuine.

Just think about how much people have to rock with you that a fan who has never met you and you don't even know exists is willing to basically risk his life and freedom because someone talked shyt about you. It sounds like some stupid shyt but when you look at it the legacy this man left behind is incredible. It is possible I'm forgetting someone, but I dont think any athlete or possibly any celebrity period has had as passionate of a stan base as Kobe.

Real talk.

Kobe inspired unparalleled passion in the people that loved him. He truly transcended sports in that way. No other athlete can really claim to have as passionate a fan base as Kobe. As a fan of his, I looked at him more like Batman/Bruce Wayne and Superman than I did an athlete. He was a Superhero in my eyes. A mythological figure. A guy who we all wanted to be but knew we couldn't because we were not as driven, dedicated, relentless, and passionate about something the way he was about basketball.

exactly.

the casuals are just beginning to understand what Mamba Mentality was but those who rocked with breh when he was playing with the Smush Parkers of the game, you saw another breed of man in the 4th quarters when he took over because he had to.

The lean years when he shouldve won MVPs over Steve Nash. Dude didn’t back down and was in another zone and won it all on his terms. Some of this mentality is believing in your own BS but it isn’t bullshyt when you can back it up with actual talent. And for so many you don’t even know if they talent exists because they aren’t putting in the hard work at all.

shyt, it’s damn near a Mt Everest type task to get some breh from living unhealthy lifestyles and going to the gym once a year. There would be times at like 5am when I had to go out and run and would look out at the park from the window and say “if I see someone out there, then I’m gonna go”. Then I realize how weak that shyt was. At some point YOU have to be that person.

There was something different about Kobe. He was special man. There was something really inspirational and simultaneously tragic about him. He took fans on an emotional rollercoaster for 20 years.

The early youthful, uncontrolled youthful exhuberance.
Becoming an all star.
Becoming a superstar and a household name as the leauges golden boy
Colorado sexual assault case and essentially becoming the Darth Vader of the leauge post '04.
Overcoming that and ascending to the top of the mountain again.
Maturing on and off the court.
Going from being closed off to forthcoming and warm in old age.
Leaving as a wise family man comfortable in his own skin only to meet a tragic end 4 years later alongside his babygirl. His babygirl we'd seen grow up from a child on his arm and lap intona young woman who sat courtside with him analyzing the game in hopes of cementing her own legacy.

He was special and given the reaction to his passing, the years of supporting him were basically vindicated. His passing really hit different, and that -- for me -- is in large part because of how violent and mysterious it was. I'm still unsettled about the circumstance surrounding his death and still haven't fully processed it.

The only celebrity I can even fathom that is in Kobe's range when it comes to stannery is Beyonce. I definitely don't see any athletes on that level.
