Should Never Mention Me
90s basketball fans grew up watching the worst basketball played at a professional level of all time and really struggle with that because it was sold as gold.
Naw. The 80s had the depth edge till the mid 2010s. 2000-2004 was the weakest era period. 2005-2010 was a Renaissance. That said, the depth in the league was still terrible. 2011-2015 was when the league was getting strong draft classes and the depth was getting decent. 2016-2020 was the best the league been. 2021-now is the best NBA. Does it have its flaws, hell yeah, mainly the kid teams like Detroit.Huh? I think by the early 2000s 80s became garbage as far as talent comparison
2000-2010 is GOAT NBA
Yes, the quotes are from people of that era, the talk of that era which is conveniently ignored.
The rule changes are remediation of garbage offense of excessive iso ball, of struggle post ups, of poor shooting, of purposeful shot clock draining possessions.
The pace was slower league-wide than it was at any point in history by the mid-90’s and only got slower up to the mid-late 2000’s.Every team didn't play like that. The Knicks did, the Pacers were the dollar store version of the Knicks. Houston played like that. Nuggets did, but Seattle didn't. None of Nellie's teams did...they were the opposite. The Hawks ran. The Bulls could play with any style, Jazz were a fast paced team, Orlando ran, Lakers were called New Showtime. Cleveland played slow.
Now, if you want to talk about '97/'98 ball, that was different. There was a transition, with all of the older guys instantly phased out at once, and the next gen not quite ready. So, from '98-'04 was some ugly ball.
And yet, they still play ISO ball. Just because you pass at the end doesn't mean it's not ISO. And there's like 2 people in the NBA now that know how to post up. And shooting percentages were still higher in the 80's - 90s than now.
The Hawks definitely played like that under Fratello, Weiss and Wilkins.Every team didn't play like that. The Knicks did, the Pacers were the dollar store version of the Knicks. The bulls didn’t play fast . In fact they were among the slowest teams. During the first 3 title years they were 19th, 22nd, and 27th out of 27 teams in pace. Then they were 25th and 19th the 2 years they started without MJ. For the last 3 title seasons they were 19th, 20th, and 22nd in pace. The Hawks definitely played like that under Fratello, Weiss and Wilkins.
The Jazz were one of the slowest teams in the league every year.
Of the contending teams, only the Bulls, Sonics, Suns and Magic played with pace.
And im using the pace stat, not the eye test.
Criticism of 90s basketball is the wackest shyt. The peak of the league's popularity domestically and culturally imo.

Think about how ugly the quality of play from so many contenders or faux contenders was like the Knicks, pacers, and Heat. Think about how Utah’s offense would crater every postseason (there was a big thread in here a couple months ago about it I think with Malone & Stockton having 9 first round exits together in the thread title) and how they were sold as a great team. Then think about how bad the bad teams would’ve looked . I said this recently:90s basketball fans grew up watching the worst basketball played at a professional level of all time and really struggle with that because it was sold as gold.
A huge part that gets overlooked about the top teams of the decade is how they got to beat up on expansion teams.6 new teams in 8 years while it felt like a lot of draft picks went bust more than usual. Miami sucked from the start (15, 18, 24, 38, 36, 42, & 32 wins in their first 7 years) until they got Alonzo Mourning from charlotte who sucked again too after that trade. Orlando was awful their first 3 seasons before getting Shaq. Minnesota won 22, 29, 15, 19, 20, 21, & 26 games over their first 8 seasons . The grizzlies won 15, 14, 19, 8 (out of 50 games), 22, 23, (first year in Memphis) 23, & 28 games over their first 8 years . They basically just threw these teams out there and said “here you go” . If they go to 32 teams and if Seattle ever gets the Sonics back, the league absolutely has to look at what they did wrong with their 1988-95 expansions.
The reality is Bron stans/ modern NBA fans can't handle the fact that the NBA is being heavily criticized right now so they are lashing out at the past.
more passive aggressive behavior from the most insecure stans in sports but they learn that behavior from their idol so I get it
