Mexican gangs are not the same as radicalized Muslims. A lot of cartel members in the states are just trying to stay out the way, get money and move silently.
Mexicans aren't blowing themselves up or shooting up a movie theater for some greater cause or religious war.

While US may be the largest single Market for them, the drug game is Global with tens of Billions at play and what we've actually seen over the past half decade is cooperation between global crime syndicates from China to Russia to Latin America to Africa. Its a whole global ecosystem and you fukk up one piece and shyt can get shaky with organized crime globally.. The Economist had a excellent article about this a few months back.
