At one point a Mercedes or Audi were two of the worst cars you could buy performance and reliability wise yet people still bought them because driving them made them feel superior to people driving a Chevy.

Trump is a bozo. I remember when bush did this with the steel tariffs in 2002, then he had to reverse it after 18months copping pleas. The Dollar starting falling and the WTO had him shook of a trade war.

The car companies complained then that steel was getting expensive and they were laying off people. The EU also threatened to retaliate with tariffs targeted towards exports common in Midwestern states to extract maximum political damage. The US has been trying to protect steel on and off and the industry just continues to shed employees. Sometimes people forget that more than 10 million Americans are employed in export oriented industries including a lot of midwest states where people like talking about this tariff business.
