You're under the assumption that they both were playing by the same rules and conditions, when it couldn't be more to the contrary. There's a reason why Trump could literally do or say anything, and idiots in this country still supported him. If folks are willing to support someone who's a convicted felon, has no political qualifications and lies at every turn, how do you convince folks otherwise?
It's no different to arguing with Flat Earthers, and then blaming those who believe the Earth is round for not beating Flat Eathers in an argument, when no amount of facts or logic will move them from their position.
He had a chance and won because people are stupid. It's as simple as that.
