I think back in the early stages of the primary campaign, just as he started to take off, he was pretty consistent on being pro-deescalation on every front but ISIS militarily. He had a great quote in the first or second debate on the Iraq war which I can't find.

Don't let these skirmishes fool you. If the U.S. we're to get it really popping with ISIS, 9/11 will look like a frat party compared to what would happen here. I.S.I.S is already in the states, we should deal wit that. What they do abroad should be Assad and the U.N'so problem not ours.
