Thor: Ragnarok Set Photos Surface as Production Controversy Rises
Marvel's latest superhero adventure Thor: Ragnarok has been filming at Village Roadshow Studios in Australia since the 4th of July, and since then, we've gotten a number of photos and videos from the set. We also have a new report which reveals that the production has fired over 100 local crew members long before their job was slated to be over.
Gold Coast Bulletin reports that approximately 105 Australian crew members who were all reportedly working on set construction, have been let go. The report reveals that these crew members were all under the assumption that they would be working through late October or early November, but they were all reportedly fired on Friday. Here's what one unidentified worker told the Gold Coast Bulletin, claiming that director Taika Waititi, a New Zealand native, is favoring crews from his homeland over the Australian locals.
"Two weeks ago you couldn't drive into the studio for all the traffic and getting out took 15 minutes - now you can just drive in and out instantly, it feels quite desolate. There is quite a lot of antagonism about how the New Zealand crew is being well looked after and seem to be in charge of a lot of the main jobs."
Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira stated last week that not all crew members would be working on Thor 3 throughout the duration of the production. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk stated that the work was simply "finished," even though the workers were promised work until November. She added that the area will get more jobs when "actors come in," as Screen Queensland received a hefty $30 million in funding from the Australian government to land Thor: Ragnarok in Australia. Another unidentified crew member revealed his frustration at the production "looking after their own."
"What the hell are they (Screen Queensland) doing with that money? I came back from Europe for this job and was told I'd have at least six months' work. I got a week's notice and haven't had time to organize work. I've got a mortgage and kids to feed. They've looked after their own and it's the locals who have all suffered."
Marvel and director Taika Waititi have not responded to this report quite yet, but we'll be sure to keep you posted as soon as more details come in. The superhero sequel has been set for release on November 3, 3017. The cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Idris Elba, Anthony Hopkins and new cast members Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum and Karl Urban. Take a look at these new photos from the set of Thor: Ragnarok, and stay tuned for more on the production and these reports of crew member firings from the set.
