Above the fray.
It's the first stop for cocaine before it goes out to the world...
Yep, Caribbean is situated between the region where the drugs are grown and where their biggest consumer markets are. Center of the narco corridor.

Control of that traffic between local gangs/transnational criminal organisations plays a role in the violence that has flared up across different countries in the Caribbean.

Been there and it’s a beautiful country. People are poor though. Most industry controlled by Indians Chinese and CACs.
They were an oil rich country. The level of poverty there is unacceptable. They should be like UAE or Kuwait with an economy transitioning away from oil.

In Trinidad, gang leaders have been able to get government contracts as “community leaders”

One way the government has tried to placate gangs.

Yep, I knew one of these islands will be next. One of the issue about Haiti's security issues with gang violence is that it is easy to replicate. Poor customs will lead to guns flooding the islands. Something seriously needs to be done to curb the violence. U.S sending billions to Ukrain yet it's neighbors are facing a huge amount violence steming from guns being ship from the U.S and they are not helping as much as they could

Trinidad has been bad for a long time. It's not going to go the way of Haiti though. It's got cocaine money. Too important to the people and countries that rely on cocaine sales to ever let Trinidad fall.

Got to add in that a sizable # of men don't have opportunities outside of the underground economy.

Yeah. Despite their issues, T&T has institutions. The Prime Minister actually can govern.

Haiti is like the Western hemisphere version of Somalia.

But Somalia is in a better spot now.

Haiti is still being punished for being the only successful slave rebellion. They got slapped with a bill, plus interest for beating Napoleon and the French to obtain freedom.
