So what?

shawty. Red, Zaytoven and Alex Luther pioneered what came to be known as trap music

the beats Jeezy and Gucci rapped over

Trapping was a action, not a sound.

Like gangsta rap.

He jus called his music trap for the new generation, cuz that's what the where doing.

I agree it evolved into a particular sound but even early Jeezy and Gucci ain’t sound nothing like what’s been going on the past few years

Check it:

  • Both started off as a small, local offshoot styles of production that had their own distinct sound from the parent genre.
  • Both blew up so that everyone started biting/being influenced by the wave.
  • Both had people switching their styles up, thematically as well as musically.
  • Both bought a level of "coarseness" to the genre that wasn't present before.
  • Both had the clubs bumping.
  • Both touched the mainstream.
  • Both got over saturated to the point of being played out due to how formulaic it had all become due to lack of innovation and everything sounding the same.
  • Both almost killed the genre they sprung from.
Feel me? :ohhh:

Only difference is Trap is wiggedy wack and NJS is fonky fresh!

*does the Running Man* :flabbynsick:

You would have a point if trap hasn't evolved to several different variations.

Been listening to some Trap recently, not just skimming but hearing, and I stand by this point as they're both painted using the same recipe for success but on different canvases. Worked for one so the rest just rinse and repeat.

Just like NJS the majority of the sounds, drums, patterns and BPM are in the same range. The artists are all using a handful of styles/vocal tone with the same few topics which are hammered like nails. The age group who are consuming it happily, all of that. They're both built on very similar blueprints as stated in the OP just with different clothes on the bones to suit the changed times.

You would have a point if trap hasn't evolved to several different variations.

You've got to consider that the game has changed in terms of urban cycles because back then the styles changed so quickly as the streets were always looking for something fresh and new. Corporates dictate now and its mainstream as well so the machine moves a lot slower. Trap will be here till it gets to that Disco saturation point and they're forced to switch up. When? Who knows. Degeneracy sells.

It can be argued that NJS did make a progression, that being the switch toward "hip-hop soul". The original feel behind NJS was that it was R&B with beats that had more of a hip-hop swing to them. As time went on and hip-hop production was starting to get slower, so did the popular sound of R&B. We don't get to Jodeci and Mary J singing over rap beats without the previous vibe of what Bobby Brown, BBD and Guy were doing.

The only similarity is they're both highly successful modern Black genres birthed within a short 20 year span.
And that's where it begins and ends.

NJS was postive, hype and full of energy.
Trap is negative, lazy and lethargic..

Trap lasted longer than New Jack Swing at this point which is crazy to think about as an oldhead.

The street music game was much quicker to change styles and lanes back when and the labels were playing catch up. Now they set the tone and extend the trend until the people have had enough of consuming what is no longer organic. Think about how many eras and waves flew through the game before it went totally mainstream.

My point in this thread still stands, however you could also argue that its all part of the same evolution with offshoots and trends as hip hop is such a creative field that reinvents its steez as it progresses. A rock song will sound like most other rock songs. Dance tracks follow a lot of the same patterns and rhythms. Classical is structured around certain instruments.

Only the heads went ham and chopped, flipped and mixed whatever they could get their hands on that sounded fresh. Thats the hip hop difference.
