(Box Office) Summer Win(d): Labor Day Weekend Box Office Results (Aug. 30- Sep. 2)

Summer at the movies is officially over. The summer wind. Warm summer wind. The summer wind.
1714848264269.png
With a box office of $3.6B, we were down 10.1% from last summer's $4B. Some may say that's a biproduct of the strikes - I'm not doing that - but there were 262 movies that played this year to last year's 210. :jbhmm:

With the excuse making out the way, let's see who won the summer. We had 9 movies gross $100M:

1Inside Out 2$650,825,110Disney
2Deadpool & Wolverine$603,907,246Disney
3Despicable Me 4$355,536,680Universal
4Twisters$260,715,155Universal

7A Quiet Place: Day One$138,930,553Paramount
8It Ends with Us$135,643,781Sony
9IF$111,149,917Paramount

Disney really showed out with two $600M movies. Inside Out 2 $650.8M domestic box office is 11th best of all time, while Deadpool & Wolverine's $603.9M is 16th. They even threw in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes with its $171.1M. They also won 10 weekends, including the last 6. :wow:

Twisters has to be the biggest surprise in the top 5, as it's racked up $260.7M and counting. It actually jumped back up to 3rd place this weekend with $7.7M and $9.8M including Labor Day. The biggest overall surprise is It Ends with Us' $135.6M. That and the $73.9M that Longlegs made.

Speaking of surprises, how bout the 15 year re-release of Coraline banking $30.4M? That's the 34th biggest box office this year. :dwillhuh:

My most anticipated movie of the season was Alien: Romulus. It had a $42M number one opening. It's made $91M. I saw it in theaters twice. :wow:

I won’t lie—after seeing how Blake Lively promoted It Ends With Us, I genuinely thought it was a romantic comedy, so you can imagine my shock when I found out it’s actually a serious film about domestic violence and abuse. They really took a weird route with the advertising for that one.
I'd imagine there were some who hadn't read the book prior that got caught off guard at the movie theater after seeing her press run, so you're not wrong at all.

The Beetle Got the Juice: Weekend Box Office Results (Sep. 6-8)

After an abomination of a summer box office, Warner Bros. is back in business with the $110M opening of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. That's almost 1.5 x Beetlejuice's lifetime $74.6M total. :damn: Beetlejuice came out in '88 but still.

It's also the second biggest September box office weekend, besting Warner Bros.' own It: Chapter One, which did $123.4M in 2017. That $110M already has Beetlejuice Beetlejuice as the 14th highest grossing movie of the year - Just behind If's $111.1M. It'll probably enter the top 10 by next weekend.

Let's see if it has the staying power of the original which opened with $8M and legged its way to $74.4M, off of the strength of a B CinemaScore. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ain't making 8.59 times it's opening weekend but it's rocking a B+ CinemaScore so early signs are promising.

@Milk Man, have you done your part and gone to the movies to support Jenna? We know @RennisDeynolds hasn't. @RennisDeynolds, have you referred to her as Jenna Whoretega yet? :skip: That sounds like something you would do. :mjlol: But maybe not. I'M the pun man around here.

I knew Beetlejuice Beetlejuice would open big, and judging by the rest of the September releases it should eat well the rest of the month :ehh:. Might try to see it next weekend.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice #1 Again #1 Again: Weekend Box Office Results (Sep. 13-15)

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice delivered an even better Saturday than expected. As a result, it pulled in a box office topping $51.6M in its second weekend. That is the 7th biggest September weekend of all time, trailing just behind The Nun's $53.8M. However, that was The Nun's opening. When it comes to non-openings, this is September's second best, behind It's $60.1M. And boy did Beetlejuice Beetlejuice need it because it fell come by 77% on its first Monday when it only grossed $6.2M. But it's all good now with a running total of $188M, which already makes it the 9th highest grossing movie of the year. :wow:

beetlejuice-michael-keaton.gif

Coming in at a distant second place is Universal's Speak No Evil, opening with $11.5M. That's almost $4 million behind Trap, which opened to $15.4M last month. But it's not so bad when you consider the $15M production budget to Trap's $30M. Should be available on pvod in the next two weeks.
smiling-paddy.gif

Deadpool & Wolverine
put up $5.2M for a third place finish. It's total domestic box office of $621.4M  is now 14th all time, moving ahead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi's $620.1M. That makes it the sixth highest grossing MCU film of all time. It will pass The Avengers, which has made $623.3M.

deadpool-3-splits.gif

Opening in fourth place was the documentary. Am I racist? with $4.7M. Yes, that's right. Am I racist? You probably are. :mjpls: how does one determine if they are racist? Well, "a man investigates diversity, equity, and inclusion practices, exposing absurdities through undercover social experiments."

This garnered an A cinemascore if you can be leave that. Who went to see this shyt? According to Deadline, "Diversity turnout was 64% Caucasian :mjpls:19% Latino and Hispanic, 6% Black and 4% Asian American."

White guilt :blessed:

220px-Am_I_Racist%3F_film_poster.png

Reagan rounds out the top five with $2.9M. How fitting that on a day where a former president was nearly assassinated - again - that Ronald Reagan movie would do numbers. :mjlol:

imagery-from-reagan.jpg

Bautista's The Killer's Game could only muster $2.6M in its debut. Another disappointment for Lionsgate.

With $2.4M, Alien: Romulus has cracked the $100M mark, with $101.2M. It's only the second film in the Alien franchise to achieve that fear. Prometheus is the top dog at $126.4M. Top dog? No, the dog was in Alien 3. :mjlol:

Twisters did another $1.2M and is up to $266.3M.

Despicable Me 4 made $1.1M and is up to $359.4M. That's two Universal summer Blockbusters still putting up good millions. :wow:

Transformers One is Two Thanks to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Weekend Box Office Results (Sep. 20-22)

In a shocking turn of events, Transformers One, will not open in first place. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice had other plans and grossed another $26M for its third victory in as many weekends. Its box office total so far is $226.8M. That's more than Logan ($226.2M) The Fate of the Furious ($225.7M) Shang-Chi ($224.5M) and Mission: Impossible - Fallout ($220.1M). :ehh: It's also the 6th highest grossing movie of the year. It'll have to pass Twisters' $267.1M to enter the top five. It should have no problem doing just that as Twisters had only grossed $195.7M after 3 weekends.

dance-beetlejuice-beetlejuice.gif

Transformers One disappointed its way to number two with a $25M opening. Excluding The Transformers: The Movie, it's only the second movie in the franchise to open under $30M and not finish number one. The other? Bumblebee, which debuted in 3rd place with $21.6M in 2018. That's right, even last year's Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, opened number one with $61M. But it does have a sensible budget of just $75M and an A CinemaScore, which should mean good legs. Right, Bumblebee?

transformers-one-bumblebee.gif

Speak No Evil made $5.9M to take 3rd place. Its $21.4M after two weeks trails Trap's $28.6M by 25%. But it's ahead of fellow Blumhouse productions, Imaginary ($19M) and Night Swim ($19.1M) at the same point in time. So it's actually doing well considering it actually opened ($11.3M) behind Night Swim's $11.7M. :manny:

that-is-very-sweet-of-you-to-say-paddy.gif

:merchant:

Another week, another Lionsgate bomb. This time it was Halle Berry's Never Let Go never getting out of the gate and only scrounging up $4.5M. I'ma just watch the season 3 premiere of From tonight instead. Sorry, Halle. :mjlol:

never-let-go-movie-title.gif

Deadpool & Wolverine closed out the top five with $3.9M. That's a running total of $627.2M after 9 weeks, which $9.1M behind Inside Out 2's $636.3M. But fear not. It's the 13th highest grossing movie ever, passing The Avengers' $623.3M. And that's a sentence that I wrote not too long ago regarding Inside Out 2. That also means that Deadpool & Wolverine is officially the 5th highest grossing MCU movie. :ooh:

deadpool-dance.gif

Notables

Demi Moore and MUBI's The Substance opened with $3.1M. That's MUBI as in the streaming service. :ohhh: It's got a straight 8 on IMDb. Looks like it's a body horror. Maybe on some Cronenberg shyt. Might have to peep.

The YouTube trailer has 3.1M views.

The movie did $3.1M this weekend. :ohhh:
