What does Stane gain from moving from #2 to #1? Dudes already obscenely wealthy. He gets to be head of a company where they removed the person who was making all the money. I guess dude took that Dame Dash interview seriously.
To find out about Thanos's plan to snap away half the universe. Infinity War pretty much makes that work now in retrospect.
He later had Tony removed from his position in a board of directors meeting so all the hostage stuff was completely unneeded anyways.
Plus Tony is still the cash cow behind all the innovation for your company. Killing him or even sidelining him entirely makes no sense. Should have just did the board meeting at the beginning and kept Tony in a lab working on new inventions.
I always felt like Stane just wanted power and notoriety as being the head honcho. Howard dies and you get to be the #1 guy and then in comes Tony to knock you back to #2 again. I also always got the feeling Stane was always jealous of Tony's intellect too as seen in the scene where they can't get Stane's reactor to work ("TONY STARK WAS ABLE TO BUILD THIS IN A CAVE WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!)
But now that @Luke Cage mentions it, Stane could've pulled the board game and just locked him out. He probably would've had a harder time w/o Tony denouncing weapons but I'm sure he had influence and could've pulled the "He can't run a weapons company. He's just a kid! " card.
Idk. I should probably stop because Iron Man is one of my favorite comic book movies and here I am finding potholes.
