I work in academia, and I would say at least half of our faculty have tattoos, including me (I have a back tattoo that most people don't even know about unless I wear a swimsuit, tank or halter). But I suppose you mean it reeks of someone who has to look a certain way in particular industries of employment.

This isn't necessarily true. I know females who won't get a tattoo because none of their family and friends would approve. They want one but are scared for being judged for it. I think there are followers on both sides. On the flip side, there are females who get tattoos because they like them and want one. I'm the only one in my friend circle who has one, so it's definitely not about doing what everyone is doing. I just wanted one.
