Edit: I didn't know that this thread was exclusively related to Tony Gwynn. I thought it was about quirky sports facts which is why I included the Walter Payton info.

Walter Payton retired from pro football as the all time rushing leader, which everyone knew. What a lot of people don't know is that he also retired with the all times receptions record and receiving yards record for running backs. He also threw 8 touchdowns to no interceptions over his career and he was the Bears backup punter, backup field goal kicker, backup kick returner and emergency backup quarterback. He was also considered among the best blocking backs in NFL history and there is an actual Lawrence Taylor story about a block Payton threw against him.

Singles cool and all but if u not on base more with that batting avg. whats the point?
Padres weren’t that good back then. I think Ken Caminiti was batting clean up? I don’t really remember them having much firepower back then. And he only stayed around because of his loyalty, he was born and raised in the area, etc. imagine him on the Braves or Yankees in the 90s. Or him batting second and Griffey batting 3rd? Him on that Mariners squad with Griffey and Randy Johnson would have won the World Series

Tony didnt walk alot
Didnt get alot of doubles

So someone that bats damn near a 100pts less with more doubles and walks OBP is just as good if not better

Great player and hitter. But give me dudes with a higher slug any day over batting avg ala like Jeff Bagwell
